Background

On November 20, 2006, the UN General Assembly declared 2009 to be the International Year of Reconciliation. With the aim of achieving a solid and durable peace, the assembly aimed to undertake reconciliation processes in societies damaged by or divided by conflicts. Governments and non-governmental groups were invited by the assembly to assist these communities' efforts towards reconciliation. Additionally, it asked them to carry out social, cultural, and educational initiatives that would foster peace.

The International Year of Reconciliation is actively promoted by the SER Foundation. Since 2005, the foundation has lobbied for a global Reconciliation Week. It considers reconciliation to be the highest form of conversation, especially when used as an energizing principle and as a tool to putting a position into practice in areas like:
  • Policy
  • Health.
  • Environment.
  • Social/Education.
  • Religion.
  • Economics.
  • Culture.
  • Sciences.
The SER foundation also holds that as a necessary prerequisite for sustainable development, reconciliation must involve all societal levels. Numerous social actors support the SER's action plan for the 2009 International Year of Reconciliation. The purpose of the event is to unite communities around a shared vision of justice, peace, and order.
