Social Welfare: Nimachalkhurd Gram Panchayat

Introduction

Nimachalkhurd is a gram panchayat in the Harda district of Madhya Pradesh that is part of the Tiwarni Block and is situated 35 kilometers from the district's administrative center. A few of the notable participatory projects the GP has tried are highlighted here.

Underground Drainage System

This town used to have issues with standing water in numerous locations across the community, which encouraged the growth of mosquitoes and diseases. The various members of the Gram Panchayat and the Gram Sabha were responsible for finding a solution to this issue in accordance with the regulations of the Gram Panchayat. The Nimachalkhurd Gram Panchayat was committed to democratic decision-making; as a result, a meeting of the Gram Sabha was held in 2011 to solicit villager input on the selection and formulation of an appropriate social welfare program. The creation of an underground drainage system, according to the local residents, ought to be given first priority. The Gram Sabha proposed that they be willing to provide 50% of the project and that the remaining 50% will be paid by the Gram Panchayat because the Gram Panchayat's financial capability prevented them from carrying out the project. The villagers were filled with pride and a sense of community after the project was finished thanks to the efforts of the Gram Panchayat. An underground drainage system with 4 inch wide PVC tubing was built throughout the entire village through a framework of cooperative partnerships. Where the pipelines merged and the effluent would be collected, chambers were built below the roads. The villagers are now more conscious of their obligations to their community and feel more responsible for it. Along with the elimination of the water collecting issue, the quality of the village's drinking water has improved, and the prevalence of mosquitoes and related diseases has decreased.

The Gram Panchayat gave its approval to the project after lengthy debate and an estimated total cost of Rs 2.4 lakh. The Gram Panchayat oversaw the beginning of the project. The various ward members assisted in project supervision within their wards, and as a result, the project was completed without the need of any subcontractors.

Complete Tax Collection

The Gram Panchayat decided to collect taxes from the villagers in order to mobilize funds and resources. As a result, they called a meeting of the Gram Sabha to discuss the issue, and after hearing the Gram Panchayat's perspective and the work they had done over time, the villagers agreed to pay their regular taxes on time. The Sarpanch of the Gram Panchayat raised awareness among the residents about paying taxes to enhance the village.

Total Sanitation Programme Under The Nirmal Bharat Abhiyaan

The removal of open defecation in the hamlet was decided to be the next step towards creating a more hygienic and healthier environment. The Gram Panchayat launched the "Total Sanitation Programme" in 2008–2009. People's lack of toilet habits and subsequent use of the open defecation were some of the first difficulties the Gram Panchayat encountered. In order to raise awareness about the use of toilets and persuade people to stop defecating in the open because it was unhealthy and frequently put them at risk of contracting various diseases, the Sarpanch of the Gram Panchayat went door to door with ASHA members, Anganwadi helpers, and Self Help Groups.

The Gram Panchayat then provided each household with a payment of Rs 4,600 in order to encourage them to build toilets. Public restrooms were built with Nirmal Bharat Abhiyaan's assistance in a number of locations. Awareness-raising programs on good sanitation were provided in schools and anganwadi facilities. Before eating a midday lunch, students in schools were encouraged to wash their hands. A welcome change was made in the lives of the residents of Nimachalkhurd Gram Panchayat who now adhere to the idea of healthy living and cleanliness in their village thanks to a system of community collaboration and joint solidarity of the Gram Panchayat and the Gram Sabha.
