Social work operates on values such as dignity, equity, and inclusion, guided by a strong ethical framework.

Two Principles of Social Work with Field Work Experience

1. Principle of Individualization

This principle emphasizes recognizing each person as a unique individual with their own experiences, needs, and strengths. Social workers should avoid generalizations and stereotypes, focusing instead on understanding the client’s specific circumstances.

Field Work Experience:
While working with a community-based organization, I encountered a single mother struggling to balance childcare and employment. By applying the principle of individualization, I listened to her specific challenges and crafted a personalized intervention plan. This included connecting her with a subsidized childcare program and providing career counselling to find flexible job opportunities. Recognizing her unique needs helped her regain confidence and stability.

2. Principle of Self-Determination

This principle asserts that clients have the right to make their own choices and decisions regarding their lives. Social workers serve as facilitators, providing guidance and resources but respecting the autonomy of individuals and communities.

Field Work Experience:
During a field placement with a youth development NGO, I worked with a group of adolescents deciding on higher education paths. Rather than dictating options, I presented various opportunities, such as scholarships, vocational training, and college programs. Encouraging the youth to make their own informed decisions led to better engagement and long-term motivation. This approach fostered their independence and confidence in decision-making.
