The first school (Department) of social work of Independent India

The first school of social work in independent India was established at Kashi Vidyapeeth in Varanasi in 1947. It was founded by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, who was also the founder of Banaras Hindu University (BHU). The school was initially called the Kashi Vidyapeeth Department of Social Work, but it was renamed the Kashi Vidyapeeth School of Social Work in 1962.

The school offers a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree program, which is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCTE).
