Meaning and Definition of Mental Health

Introduction

Psychologists and social workers have agreed that the phrases "full maturity" and "mental health" may be used interchangeably. Around the age of 20, a person's physical, sexual, and intellectual maturity is attained. It's also common knowledge that after this age, there aren't much changes in terms of growth in these areas. However, achieving adulthood in simply the physical, sexual, and intellectual realms is insufficient. Aside from these areas, emotional, social, and role knowledge are critical, since they can be termed complete or comprehensive maturity or mental health when they are combined.

Definition and Meaning of Mental Health

Mental health has been described in many ways by psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists.

"Mental health is a generally lasting condition whereby the individual is well adjusted, has a passion for Workers living, and is reaching self-actualization or self-realization; it is a positive stateand not simply the absence of mental illness," according to H.B. English, a Psychologist.

Psychiatrist Karl Merringer believes that "Let us define mental health as the most effective and happy adjustment of human beings to the world and to one another. It's not simply efficiency, or contentment, or the grace of joyfully following the rules of the game; it's all of these things combined. It's the capacity to keep a steady temper, a sharp intellect, socially sensitive behaviour, and a cheerful demeanour.

This, I believe, is a healthy state of mind ".. "Mental health is a state and degree of social functioning that is socially acceptable and personally fulfilling," says W.W Boehm, a social worker.

Finally, mental health may be defined as "the optimal growth and functioning of the individual compatible with the group's long-term well-being and advancement." This concept entails the growth of sufficient, integrated individuals with healthy attitudes and values as well as a high level of stress tolerance (Coleman- 1964).
